Lyme Disease: Be Vigilant About Ticks

Published May 7, 2026

Citizen information

Lyme disease is on the rise in Quebec and poses a risk to people who work or take part in outdoor activities. It is caused by a bacterium transmitted through the bite of a blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis).

When and where is the risk present?

  • As soon as temperatures reach 4°C and there is no snow on the ground
  • In wooded areas, tall grass, leaf litter, and gardens

Symptoms to watch for

  • A circular or bull’s-eye rash larger than 5 cm, appearing 3 to 30 days after a bite
  • Fatigue, headaches, muscle and joint aches
  • If untreated: joint swelling, facial paralysis, cardiac or neurological symptoms

Prevention

  • Use an insect repellent containing DEET (30% or less) or icaridin (20% or less)
  • Stay in the center of marked trails and avoid tall grass
  • Inspect your body after outdoor activities
  • Place clothing in a high-heat dryer after activities

If bitten by a tick

  • Remove the tick as soon as possible
  • Clean the bite area thoroughly
  • Record the date, time, and location of the bite
  • Call Info-Santé 811

Antibiotic treatment is generally effective when Lyme disease is detected early.
