Voting in Municipal Elections
Making sure your name is on the list of electors
To vote, you must be registered on the list of electors at your home address. Make sure your information is accurate. Don't wait! On election day, you will not be able to register or change your address.
You can check that your name is on the list of electors:
- By contacting Elections Quebec outside of an election period
- On the information card or registration notice you received in the mail at the beginning of the election period
- By contacting your returning officer, during a municipal election
Voting Requirements for Municipal Elections
To vote, you must meet the following conditions:
- Be entered on the list of electors
- It is your responsibility to confirm your entry and ensure that your information is up to date by contacting your municipality’s returning officer.
- Be 18 years of age or older on election day
- Be a Canadian citizen
- Not have lost your election rights
- When a by-election is held, to be entered on a municipality’s list of electors, a person must be a qualified elector on the publication date of the notice of election.
You must also meet one of the following two conditions depending on your domiciliary address:
- If your home is located in the municipality, you must:
- If your domicile is not located in the municipality, you must:
- Own a building or occupy a business establishment located on the territory of the municipality since at least 12 months;
- Have sent an application for entry or a power of attorney to the municipality within the required timeframe.
Running for office
Eligibility
To run as a candidate, a person must:
- Have the right to be registered on the municipal list of electors
- Have resided in this territory (continuously or not) for at least 12 months as of one of the following dates:
- in the case of a general election, September 1 of the calendar year in which the election is to be held
Forms
Nomination papers can be obtained from the office of the municipal returning officer.
Filing of nomination papers
Completed nomination papers must be filed between the 44th and 30th day before the date set for the election. Candidates must file their nomination papers with the office of the returning officer. The hours of operation for the office are specified on the public notice of election. Nomination papers are accepted until 4:30 p.m. on the last day.
